Guillermo Meza (1917-1997)
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Guillermo Meza was a Mexican painter, known for his realist portraits and figures as well his inventive landscapes. Born on September 11, 1917 in Mexico City to an indigenous Tlaxcalan (Tlaxcaltecan) father, Meza's parents had interest in history, literature, and the arts. His surrealist, expressionist paintings often draw from his heritage, such as indigenous mythology, as well as socio-political themes.

This beautiful panel is a continuous colorful feast of scrolling large-scale flowers and leafage interspersed with small birds and butterflies. Simplified but similar motifs are found on the drawer-fronts of the ivory plaqued cabinet on stand in the Reves Collection (1985.R.573.A-C).

Rufino Tamayo was a Mexican printmaker, painter, and muralist, known for his innovation in lithography, monumental paintings, and vivid use of color. Born on August 26, 1899 in Oaxaca, Mexico, Tamayo briefly trained at the Academia de San Carlos (San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts), before leaving only a year later to teach himself.
