GENERAL DESCRIPTION
While the humble subject of this painting carries a heavy burden, she wears an expression of resolve and dignity, with her body unbroken and unhampered by her load. Perhaps the most legendary Mexican muralist, Diego Rivera repeatedly depicted the daily life of Mexican workers, the private rites and street festivals of their annual celebrations, and other aspects of their cultural heritage and life. As in this drawing, he portrayed them as vital, rather than backward and poverty-stricken.
