Robert Jenkins Onderdonk invoked the example of his teacher William Merritt Chase in his still lifes, perhaps his most successful type of painting.

After apprenticing with Joseph Legare, a Canadian history painter, Antoine Sébastian Plamondon was sent to Paris where he studied with a pupil of Jacques-Louis David. Returning to Canada, Plamondon quickly became the preeminent painter in Quebec, a position he jealously guarded throughout his long career.

This painting is one of a pair of screens on the same subject: the buildings and landscape of the Japanese imperial capital Kyoto. Kano Eitoku was the son of a well-known artist, Shoei, and the grandson of Motonobu, a founder of the Kano school of painters.
