Inspired by the magnified shapes found in blood samples, this work, with its organic, bulbous-looking forms adhered

to canvas, is indicative of the artist’s early experimentation as a member of the Gutai Art Association.

This early drawing bears a relationship to Shimamoto’s Holes series of paintings, begun around the same time, in which the artist would glue layers of paper together and wear or puncture holes into their surfaces.

In 2018, the Dallas Museum of Art took a close look at the number of women artists represented in its collection. This analysis corresponded with the Museum's exhibition of work by the Guerrilla Girls, an anonymous collective of women artists who use humor, marketing strategies, and bold text to expose gender- and race-based discrimination in the art world and beyond.
