Borneo: The Island—Its Peoples

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Bigger than the state of Texas and more than seventeen times larger than the Netherlands, Borneo is the world’s third-largest island. Since 1963, it has been divided among East Malaysia (Sarawak and Sabah), the oil-rich Sultanate of Brunei, and Indonesia (Kalimantan).

Song dynasty (960-1279)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Song is divided into the Northern Song (960-1127) with the capital at Bianjing (present day Kaifeng), and the Southern Song (1127-1279), the capital of which was located at Linan (now Hangzhou). 

Han dynasty (206 BCE- 220 CE)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Following the death of the Qin emperor Qin Shi Huang, civil war ensued before China was reunited under the Han dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE). The Han is divided into two periods: the Western Han (206 BCE - 9 CE) and Eastern Han (25-220 CE).

Edo period (1603-1868)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Edo period, which is dated from 1600, 1603, and at other times from 1615, lasted until the Meiji Restoration in 1868. During this time, Japan was controlled by the Tokugawa shogunate, a military body which exercised power over the emperor and other Japanese noble families.

Azuchi-Momoyama period (1573-1603)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Momoyama period is named for the site of the last great architectural project of the shogun Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-1598). It is sometimes referred to as the Azuchi-Momoyama period, referring to Oda Nobunaga's (1534-1582) castle at Azuchi. The dates of this transitional period preceding the establishment of a single, unified authority are still debated.

Art Students League (New York, NY)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Art Students League was founded in 1875 in reaction to the National Academy of Design’s plan to remove life drawing from the curriculum. It grew rapidly in its first year, helmed by Lemuel E. Wilmarth as its first president. The League was funded purely by membership fees, allowing the institution a degree of independence.

Texas Centennial Exposition and Art Exhibition (1936)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition was one of America's great world's fairs of the 1930s—this one celebrating the 100th anniversary of Texas's independence from Mexico. Local festivities started as early as 1935, and both the Dallas Exposition and Fort Worth's Frontier Centennial carried on through 1937. 

Roman Provinces

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
At the height of its power in the 2nd century CE, the Roman Empire stretched from England to Egypt, and from Spain to Syria. Roman law united this vast territory, and Roman culture infiltrated the farthest points of the Empire.
