Modern Japan begins with the reign of Emperor Meiji (1852-1912; r. 1868-1912), whose name, meaning "enlightened rule," was intended to symbolize the new age. In society, the economy, and the arts, the Meiji period was a time of both upheaval and accomplishment.

From the era of its inception, Islam had a significant impact on India. Muslim warriors brought their faith to the area of the Indus Valley from the 8th century onward, beginning to establish Islam in what is now Afghanistan, Pakistan, and northern India. To these adventurous leaders, the Gangetic plains of northern South Asia were compelling conquests, agriculturally rich, and also wealthy in gold and precious materials.
