1975.65.FA Piet Mondrian, Willow Grove: Impression of Light and Shadow
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Piet Mondrian is famous for his abstract paintings, but this relatively early work reveals his origins as a landscape painter in the Impressionist tradition. The stout trunks and gnarled branches of the willow trees crisscross the background and reflect in the water in the foreground.
1982.23.FA Piet Mondrian, Self-Portrait
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This striking drawing was Piet Mondrian’s last self-portrait. Made after a long hiatus from depicting himself, it is likely a reworking of another self-portrait drawing made from as early as 1911. Mondrian shows himself in half-profile, head turned to the left.

The Eiffel Tower with its soaring wrought iron girders, erected for the Paris International Exposition in 1900, was already an icon of modernity when Robert Delaunay painted it in 1924. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Part of the group of German Expressionists working in the early 20th century, Max Beckmann is especially well known for his psychologically fraught self-portraits.
1981.37 Natalia Goncharova, Maquillage
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The lively Maquillage is a tangible example of the artistic forces surrounding the origins of the Russian avant-garde and its technical innovations. Fragmented volumes represent cubism; deeply saturated yellow, red, and black are evidence of fauvism's influence; and the violent intersections of arcs and rays point to Italian futurism.
