Mughal Empire (1526-1858)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
From the era of its inception, Islam had a significant impact on India. Muslim warriors brought their faith to the area of the Indus Valley from the 8th century onward, beginning to establish Islam in what is now Afghanistan, Pakistan, and northern India. To these adventurous leaders, the Gangetic plains of northern South Asia were compelling conquests, agriculturally rich, and also wealthy in gold and precious materials.

Mercury

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The chemical element mercury is toxic to humans. Early photographers used mercury as part of the daguerreotype process. It reacts with silver to produce the image.

Sanseisha Company

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Sanseisha Company was likely created in 1875  by Oshima Joun (1857-1940) in Tokyo. An inscription of the sculpture Takenouchi no Sukune Meets the Dragon King of the Sea indicates that Oshima and two assistants labored for two years to create the piece, which would ultimately be displayed in 1881 at the Second Domestic Industrial Exhibition in Tokyo [1993.86.11.FA].

Sicán (Lambayeque)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Sicán (or Lambayeque) culture flourished on the north coast of Peru from about 700 to 1370 CE. The name Sicán was coined in the 1980s based on the local Muchik language term Sian, meaning "house" or "temple" (-An ) "of the moon" (Si-), recorded by Spanish chroniclers present in this region during the 16th century.

Wari (Huari)

In the history of the central Andes, the Middle Horizon (600–1000 CE) was dominated by two cultures, Tiahuanaco (Tiwanaku) and Huari (Wari). The names of the cultures derive from two imperial cities that flourished in the central and southern highlands—Huari near the modern city of Ayacucho in present-day Peru, and Tiahuanaco on the edge of Lake Titicaca in what is now northwestern Bolivia.

Gerald Murphy (1888-1964)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Gerald Murphy was born in 1888 in Boston. His father was the owner of the Mark Cross company—a successful luxury goods store—and he tried, unsuccessfully, to interest Gerald in the family business.
