This exuberant baroque-style mahogany cabinet, adorned with floral marquetry or geometric inlay on all the doors and compartments, is composed of thousands of intricately shaped bits of mother of pearl and tortoise shell along with ivory.

A virtuosic object of unexpected size and contrasts,

Inspired by the magnified shapes found in blood samples, this work, with its organic, bulbous-looking forms adhered

to canvas, is indicative of the artist’s early experimentation as a member of the Gutai Art Association.

This early drawing bears a relationship to Shimamoto’s Holes series of paintings, begun around the same time, in which the artist would glue layers of paper together and wear or puncture holes into their surfaces.
