2011.11, Liz Larner, Planchette, 2010

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
A virtuosic object of unexpected size and contrasts, Planchette appears to hover just in front of the wall supĀporting it, making it look flat from a distance. As one approaches it, however, its dark, matte surface begins to open up, revealing variegations and incredible depth (it projects nearly three feet from the wall). From a distance, Planchette might appear to be a smudgy black painting, but closer inspection reveals rich strata of hues on an undulating, rectangular surface, albeit one torqued and twisted like a ribbon floating in the wind.
