Object Notes

On Kawara made the "Today" series of paintings between 1966 and 2013. In these paintings, Kawara uses a systematic approach to document the passage of time. They are made on the date referred to in the title and if they are not finished by midnight of that date, they are destroyed. The order of information and the language used follow the convention of the country in which the painting was executed.

In this dramatic work, Renée Stout has developed an ambitious visual idea, i.e., the interpretation of self as a figure of empowerment.
