Casting

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Cast pieces were made by pouring molten metal into a negative mold to produce an object in the round. These molds may have been hand carved or made of baked clay formed around a model. 

Alloy

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
An alloy is the mixture of two or more compatible metals, either naturally occurring or made by melting the two together to form a homogeneous mass.

Terracotta

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Terracotta is a ruddy brown, hard-baked clay used for construction (roof tiles, cornices), sculpture, or pottery. It is molded or shaped by hand and then dried for a period of time before being baked or fired at high temperatures. Though often left unglazed, terracotta objects can be glazed prior to firing or painted once dry.

Red-Figure Greek Vase Painting

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
A method for decorating clay objects that was developed by the ancient Athenians, the red-figure Greek vase painting technique appears in red, and the background in black. The background is painted on and allowed to dry while all linear detail in the decoration is made by painting on lines.

Black-Figure Greek Vase Painting

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Black-figure vase painting is a method of decorating clay objects that was developed by the ceramic artisans of the ancient Greek city of Corinth.  The decoration appears in black and the background in red. The decoration is painted on and allowed to dry. All linear detail in the decoration is made by cutting through the black areas and allowing the red color of the clay to show through.

Repoussé and Chasing

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Repoussé is the process of decorating with a blunt tool by raising the surface of the metal from the back, leaving the ornament in relief. Sheet metal can be punched, scored, scratched, formed, or hammered against a yielding surface. Chasing is similar, but is done from the front of the sheet.

Britannia Standard Silver

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Britannia Standard for silver was implemented by English King William III from 1697 to 1719 in order to assist in making new coins. This rule raised the amount of silver in the alloy to 95.8 percent. Preceding and following this rule, British coinage was made from sterling silver which contains 92.5 percent of the precious metal.

Gouache

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Gouache is a technique of painting with opaque pigments in a water base. (It also refers to a work in this medium.) Although often associated with watercolor paints, the primary difference is that gouache is not transparent.
