Hailed by the New York Times as “an original and remarkable genius” and by the Independent as “a master storyteller, in a class of his own making,” Kazuo Ishiguro won the Nobel Prize for Literature and the Booker Prize. Born in Japan and raised in England, Ishiguro is one of the most celebrated writers of our time. His work has been translated into over 50 languages; The Remains of the Day and Never Let Me Go, both made into acclaimed films, have each sold more than two million copies.

The Nobel committee described his books as “novels of great emotional force.” That certainly rings true with his new novel, Klara and the Sun, which Ishiguro will read from briefly and discuss at this event. Klara is an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities; from her place in a department store, she watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass on the street outside. She remains hopeful that a customer will soon choose her. It is a thrilling book that offers a look at our changing world through the eyes of an unforgettable narrator, and that explores one of life’s fundamental questions: what does it mean to love?

“This might be my favorite of all his books. . . . This is a novel about the capaciousness of the human heart—Klara describes it as having ‘rooms within rooms within rooms’—and the relationship between memory and grief and love."

—Jordan Pavlin, Knopf editorial director
