Using found objects in the streets of San Antonio after a catastrophic flood, young Octavio Medellín was inspired to pursue his legendary career as an artist. His love for art and community left foundational legacies in San Antonio that are still appreciated today.

Join Kristel Puente, Moody Graduate Fellow at Southern Methodist University, as she discusses the early life and works of the late Texas artist Octavio Medellín and his impact on San Antonio, and on Texas at large.

Octavio Medellín (1907–1999) was an influential Mexican American artist and teacher whose work helped shape the Texas art scene for six decades. The DMA is proud to present Octavio Medellín: Spirit and Form, the first-ever museum retrospective for the noted sculptor.
