Virtual tickets are available for this event through October 31.

Selected by President Obama as the fifth inaugural poet in US history, Richard Blanco joins the ranks of such luminaries as Robert Frost and Maya Angelou, and is the first Latino, immigrant, and gay person to serve in such a role. Blanco was born in Madrid to Cuban exile parents and raised in Miami, and the negotiation of cultural identity characterizes his award-winning poetry.

His latest book of poems, How to Love a Country, both interrogates the American narrative, past and present, and celebrates the still unkept promise of its ideals. In celebration of the DMA’s exhibition My|gration, Blanco will read a specially commissioned poem inspired by works of art in the DMA's collection, as well as share a selection of his poems that narrate his own immigrant story and the complex navigation of identity, community, and belonging.

Blanco is the author of two memoirs, and his inaugural poem, “One Today,” was published as a children’s book, in collaboration with illustrator Dav Pilkey. Boundaries, a collaboration with photographer Jacob Hessler, challenges the physical and psychological dividing lines that shadow the United States. A builder of poems as well as of cities, Blanco has degrees in civil engineering and creative writing. He serves as the first Education Ambassador for the Academy of American Poets.

“Blanco’s contributions to the fields of poetry and the arts have already paved a path forward for future generations of writers. . . . Our Nation was built on the freedom of expression, and poetry has long played an important role in telling the story of our Union and illuminating the experiences that unite all people.” —President Barack Obama
