GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The art moderne style was prompted by contemporary French art deco design of the 1920s. The term art deco was derived from the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes (International Exposition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts) in Paris, though not coined until the 1960s. Objects created in the art moderne style are characterized by geometric forms and stylized decoration, particular floral designs, and classicized figures. Art moderne works began to fade from the market with the sobering effects of the Great Depression and vanished almost entirely by World War II as the style was rejected as dated and frivolous.
