GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Abstract works of art can be either non-representational, or can be derived from the real world. In the first case, the work of art is completely invented by the artist, and does not directly reproduce anything in the real world. In the second case, the artist may start with an observation in the real world and then transform that image into a pattern-like shape or form.
NOTES
Deleted TMS tag 2006.6
Added the two exhibition catalogues as assets. All revisions done. Wrote functional rule. Removing the #routed tag and replacing with #complete. The GDoc has been moved to Queta's folder in GDrive. 2/28/2017.
I wrote this rule to apply across all collections but it could be modified if "abstract" should not apply to certain curatorial departments?
Noticed this term on the object page for Mary Cassatt, Sleepy Baby- adding this as an exclusion to the rule. Will have happened to other non-abstract works if the object texts include "abstracted" or "abstraction." I skimmed the 155 results in Brain and excluded those in which "abstract" appeared with a non-art meaning.
RULE- attempted to exclude all Khipu (quipu) because their text used "abstract" as an adjective for concepts, not visual forms. I first wrote a line to exclude all objects where title contains khipu-- this did not work. I tried variations of this, including typing each individual object number for the 20 objects that have a title containing khipu. For some reason, the four object numbers excluded for other reasons (a Corot, Benson, Cassatt, and Hogue) all are removed from the results, but the 20 khipu are not excluded. The results for the rule remain 171 with or without the addition 20 lines excluding the khipu object numbers?
Khipu- lines removed from rule:
Exclude objects where number equals 1983.W.2170
Exclude objects where number equals 1983.W.2169
Exclude objects where number equals 1983.W.2171
Exclude objects where number equals 1983.W.2172

TROUBLESHOOTING- attempt to use "apply to" instead of "exclude"- so I tried listing all department ID numbers except the Arts of the Americas.
apply to objects where label_copy contains abstract or where public_notes contains abstract
apply to objects where department_id equals 1 or where department_id equals 4 or where department_id equals 5 or where department_id equals 6 or where department_id equals 7 or where department_id equals 9 or where department_id equals 11 or where department_id equals 12 or where department_id equals 14 or where department_id equals 60
apply to content where tag_value equals 300134134 or where tag_value equals 300108127
RESULTS- 62 objects. *This is too small of a number but I can't refine the results in the search engine. As an approximate test, I searched "abstract" in the OLC (304 results) and 24 results are in Arts of the Americas.
SIMPLIFY? Added this line instead of the exclude lines-- Apply to objects where department_id not equals 8---still gives the same number of reults (does not exclude Arts of the Americas objects). Same thing happened when I tried "Apply to objects where department_name not equals Arts of the Americas. (Results continued to be 171.)
