GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The famille rose palette is distinguished by an opaque and semi-opaque enamel derived from gold and used to produce a range of colors, from a deep ruby to a pale pink, by adding an opaque white enamel. This opaque white also enabled the artist to shade in much the same manner as a painter in oils. Introduced during the reign of the Emperor Yung Chen (Yongzheng) (1723-1735), it largely replaced the taste for famille verte during the remaining three-quarters of the 18th century.
