GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Shinagawa was the first stopping point on the Tōkaidō , about 4.5 miles south of Nihonbashi on the Bay of Edo (now Tōkyō Bay). At each station, the road was lined with shops offering tea and other refreshments, travel necessities, and special local products.
