GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshops) member Carl Otto Czeschka was a highly prolific graphic designer whose oeuvre includes numerous examples of book illustrations, calendars, advertisements, and postcards. While unsigned, unmarked, and undocumented in archival records, the stylistic similarities between his graphic designs and this design for playing card--one of three in the Dallas Museum of Art collection--suggest the attribution to his hand. The stylized figure clothed in patterned garb and positioned in three quarters profile is reminiscent of those depicted in the double-page lithograph illustrations Czeschka produced for Franz Keim's Die Niebelungen (2014.35), published in 1909 by Gerlach & Wiedling as part of its Jugendbücherei (Youth Library) series.
