1985.B.1, Chester County, Pennsylvania, "Chest of drawers," (1710-1730)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The decoration of this chest, composed of inset strips of light-colored wood, suggests a geometric pattern of tulips and berries. Although this type of decoration has long been associated with Germans, who began immigrating to southeastern Pennsylvania in 1683, recent scholarship suggests Welsh craftsmen were among the first to bring these designs to rural Chester County.
