1963.184.6.FA Louis Sullivan, Proscenium air grille

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Architect Louis Sullivan designed the exterior and interior ornament for the firm Adler and Sullivan's more than 200 projects, developing for each a "system of ornament" wherein all elements, whether ornamental or functional, related to one another and to the overall scheme. With its stylized flower forms, the pierced and painted plaster air grille, originally located in the proscenium of Chicago's Schiller Theater, demonstrates Sullivan's preference for decoration derived from nature rather than historical styles.

Drawn from
  • John Vinci, The Art Institute of Chicago: The Stock Exchange Trading Room (Chicago: The Art Institute of Chicago, 1977),
  • David A. Hank and Donald C. Peirce, The Virginia Carroll Crawford Collection: American Decorative Arts, 1825-1917 (Atlanta, GA: High Museum of Art, 1983), 80.
