1985.R.257.a-b, Covered Goblet, England, c. 1740-1760

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This goblet is believed to have been made in the mid-18th century. It has a plain stem, rounded bowl, and elaborate engraving that features grape vines around its foot, shell motifs at the base of the bowl, and baskets of fruit and flowers at the tip of the reserves in addition to masks, garlands of fruits, tassels, and scrollwork. While the decoration was almost certainly executed in England, it is likely that the engraver was from the continent, perhaps Bohemia. Numerous foreign engravers worked in England in the 18th century.
