GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Stars embodies Sol Lewitt's concepts in a unique way. Beginning with a three pronged star, he carries his permutations on, increasingly approaching the form of a circle by systematically increasing up to ten the number of points and, consequently, the size of their angles. The system with which Lewitt generated the elements of this sculpture is analogous to the one he used in the DMA's wall drawing (1985.3) that acts as a "rose window" at the east end of the barrel vault. These works eschew arbitrary and chance decisions by avoiding the subjective intervention of the artist during the process of execution.
