1985.R.97, Rug, 18th century, Europe

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Wide borders enclosing squares are interrupted by octagons and lozenges. Single male figures stand within each octagon, their arms transformed into arrowheaded scarfs, Each square has a floral center and a man either on or behind a serrated goat in each corner. The leaf forms sprouting from the octagons and within the lozenges are hooked, a characteristic of these rugs. Few of these delicate and charming West Caspian silks have survived without restoration. This example is pieced.

Excerpt from
Dallas Museum of Art, The Wendy and Emery Reves Collection (Dallas, Texas: Dallas Museum of Art, 1985), 210.
