GENERAL DESCRIPTION
In the 1960s, Brazilian Sergio de Camargo was working and exhibiting in Paris, where he was an active member of an artist collective, Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel (GRAV). A main purpose of the collective was to experiment in the creation of optical and kinetic sculptures under shared formal and theoretical practices. Camargo’s involvement in the group informed and inspired his monochromatic relief sculptures and served as the foundation for a new body of work. The undulating surface of Relief No. 262, made of hundreds of cylindrical wooden dowels, is both organic and mechanical in movement and composition. The delicate play of light, shadow, and line on the work’s white surface emphasizes the tactility of the wood, which sharply projects from the surface of the relief.
