1991.75.92.6, Ingot, Rome, 1st century C.E., gold


GENERAL DESCRIPTION  
Ingots are a mass of any type of metal, in this case gold, cast into convenient shape for storage and transportation, to be rolled, forged, melted, or otherwise processed later. This particular gold ingot was part of a goldsmith's cache discovered in Rome. The group of objects (1991.75.92.1, 1991.75.92.2.1, 1991.75.92.3, 1991.75.92.4.a-b) dates to the 1st century BCE, and is impressive for its total weight of nearly 746 grams, while also allowing a rare glimpse into the work of a goldsmith. This trapezoidal ingot is the smaller of the the two found in this cache.
