Handwritten note by Everett Spruce: "This painting represents a real place I saw in the Big Bend National Park in West Texas. I came upon this subject during my first trip to West Texas in the summer of 1935. I was much impressed by the monumental shapes in the landscape. I liked the elegant gestures of the limbs of the tree in the foreground. I made a fairly detailed drawing of the subject on the spot and finished the painting about three [word missing] later at my home studio."

[1] The name of the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts, founded in 1933, was changed to the Dallas Museum of Art in 1983.
[2] The Dallas Art Association is the predecessor to the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts. The name was abandoned in 1970. Works from this collection were transferred to the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts. The name of the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts, founded in 1933, changed to the Dallas Museum of Art in 1983.
