GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Eugene Speicher first saw Vincent "Red" Moore, a farmer and tradesman, working in a blacksmith shop in southern New York State. For five years, Moore posed for Speicher in the autumn following the close of the farming and hunting seasons. In these portraits, Speicher emphasized his model's strength and ruggedness and presented him as the embodiment of American masculinity. Often these portraits placed Moore in an interior setting surrounded by the tools of his trade.

Eugene Speicher 's portraits are sensitive characterizations; they emphasize the more permanent or durable qualities of the sitter, achieving a monumental sense of form and showing organization and careful consideration.
The artist was born in New York, studied at the Art Students League under William Chase, attended evening classes at Henri School of Art under Robert Henri. Speicher is a member of the National Academy of Design: He has received major prizes in exhibits at the Carnegie Institute, the Chicago Art Institute, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
His paintings are owned by twenty-seven museums. "The only museums," writes a critic, "which have not Speicher's paintings are: first, those which are going to get them, second, those which cannot afford the luxury."
Speicher said about his paintings: "Any subject that releases me and sets my creative faculties in motion, I believe to be an adequate subject. It is what I take to the subject that is of importance. When I successfully express myself, my work is autobiographical, and registers what appreciation and understanding of life I have.
"I realize fully that the major and most enduring interest in a work of art is an aesthetic one, but I feel this interest can be augmented by an underlying human sympathy. "
