2005.21.7 Marilyn Times Five

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Marylin Times Five was one of two films Bruce Conner made in the 1970s. It took five years to complete, and is built from fragments of a degraded, grainy black-and-white 1950s soft-core pornographic film featuring Arline Hunter, a Marylin Monroe lookalike, posing topless for the camera with a bottle of coke and an apple. Rather than showing the footage in its entirety, Conner presents short fragments, some of which are repeated numerous times, interspersed with black leader. The song "I'm Through with Love" sung by Marilyn Monroe for the movie Some Like It Hot plays five times. In this film Conner has used repetition to challenge how images come to stand for the subjects they represent through the endless recycling of a few images in mass media and endeavored to make the viewer see the subject in a new way. His use of repetition is also in keeping with that of avant-garde filmmakers of the 1920s, such as Fernand Léger, who explored how repetition turned the human body into a plastic object devoid of psychological depth.
