From Getty: Hill took a trip to Yosemite in 1862 and became the first artist to open a studio there. He produced more than 5,000 oil paintings of Yosemite.
In letter from Ann C. Stewart, Curatorial Administrative Assistant, to Louise Pubols, Historian at the Autry Museum of Western Heritage dates May 8, 2000:
"The painting is generically entitled Yosemite, c. 1890, and there has been conflicting information regarding its specific site. It has been identified as El Capitan or Half Dome with either Vernal Falls or Nevada Falls in the foreground."
