2005.89.6 Helen Torr, Still Life with Mechanical Man

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Representational elements share equal weight with abstract biomorphic and geometric forms in this still life by Philadelphia born Helen Torr. Although initially interested in landscape and still life, Torr radically changed her style after a 1919 meeting with painter Arthur G. Dove, one of the pioneers of American abstraction (his painting Up the Alley is on view nearby). Throughout the 20s and into the 30s, Torr filtered the natural world through the lens of abstraction. Torr married Dove in 1932 and effectively stopped painting in 1937 after her husband suffered a heart attack.
