1964.28 Seth Eastman, Ball Play of the Dakota

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This etching is one of numerous scenes of Native American life executed from direct observation by Seth Eastman, a West Point-educated surveyor who was stationed at Fort Crawford, Wisconsin, and Fort Snelling, Minnesota. The abundance of detail testifies to Eastman’s close observation of and familiarity with Native American customs. The artist was later commissioned by Congress to paint a series of Native American scenes, which today decorate the US Capitol.
