GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Taking found photographic negatives and film as a point of departure, Marlo Pascual creates photo-based sculptures, installations, and images by employing strategies of appropriation that simultaneously reflect a sophisticated understanding of art history. Pascual culls her vintage pictures from eBay and thrift stores; some come from amateur photography clubs where the photographers attempted to create “artistic” photos. Filtering through still lifes, interiors, furniture, portraits, headshots, nudes, and pin-ups, Pascual enlarges, crops, and restages the images using minimalist objects, props, and lighting to form new relationships. Subjects are removed from their previous context and recast in new roles.
