1991.75.92.5, Ingot, Rome, 1st century C.E., gold

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Ingots are a mass of any type of metal, in this case gold, cast into convenient shape for storage and transportation, to be rolled, forged, melted, or otherwise processed later. This particular gold ingot was part of a goldsmith's cache discovered in Rome. The group of objects (1991.75.92.1, 1991.75.92.2.1, 1991.75.92.3, 1991.75.92.4.a-b) dates to the 1st century BCE and is impressive for its total weight of nearly 746 grams, while also allowing a rare glimpse into the work of a goldsmith. This ingot, the larger of the two (1991.75.92.6) found in the cache, has three long triangular sides and one smaller one. On one side it shows rough tool marks.
