GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This print presents a motley cast of characters gathering on a dark and damp city street: a man with ragged clothing, a little girl wrapped in a shawl, a black lapdog, a chic woman wearing an ostrich-plumed hat, and a man selling roasted chestnuts on the sidewalk. Typical of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s work, the figures represent different social types that cohabited the streets of Paris. Given the grittiness of the setting, the fashionable woman may be a denizen of Paris’s pleasure-seeking demi-monde (underworld), her flashy ensemble contrasting with those of the less fortunate on the sidewalk.
