1968.27 Louis Léopold Boilly, Young Artist (La jeune artiste)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
A remarkable draftsman and refined painter, Louis Léopold Boilly recorded one of the most colorful periods of French history: the Revolution and the roughly twenty-five years that followed it. His paintings depict witty and lively anecdotes of Parisian life during this time that are now precious social and historical documents. Boilly painted over five thousand portraits in his lifetime, and, among them, the theme of the artist’s studio was a favorite. Although this work features a female painter at her easel, a relatively rare motif, the real subject seems to be Boilly’s virtuosic, almost photorealist treatment of the sitter’s elegant and luxurious attire.
