2000.105.FA Raoul Dufy, Self-portrait

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This self-portrait by Raoul Dufy was created as the frontispiece for a book by French historian and museum conservator René Héron de Villefosse. The book, entitled Eaux de vie (Brandy), featured seventeen lithographs by Dufy, twelve of which were colored with pochoir. Pochoir is a stencil-based printing technique used to make fine limited editions and to add color to pre-existing prints. Along with Dufy, other important 20th-century artists such as Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse often used this technique for book illustrations.

Color was a key part of Dufy’s painting, drawing, and printmaking. After seeing the Fauve Room in the 1905 Salon d’Automne in Paris, the artist declared, “I grasped at once the new raison d’être of painting . . . when I saw this miracle of the imagination at play, in drawing and in color.”
