2000.29.FA Félix Vallotton, The Shower

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Shower is one of seven prints that Félix Vallotton included in an album titled Paris Intense (Intense Paris). The series illustrates, sometimes humorously, the trials and tribulations of living in the metropolis, such as this scene of Parisians scurrying in the midst of a sudden downpour. The simplified forms, compositional structure, and subject were likely inspired by Japanese woodblock prints from the Edo period (1615–1868). Although he was also a gifted painter, Vallotton is perhaps better known for such striking prints that contrast solid black forms with the white of the paper support.
