1989.95, Margaret Goodgeon, Candlestand, c. 1830-1850

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Even though decorating furniture appears to have been frequently taught in girls schools during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, few examples of such work survives. This candlestand is a rare exception. Made in the Philadelphia area in the second quarter of the 19th century, this stand is the only one of its type known. Its surface is decorated with silhouetes of dancers from around the world as well as farm animals.  Each figure was cut from black paper and then applied to the table before it was varnished.
