GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The area of Greek settlements in western Anatolia known as Ionia developed a rich decorative ceramic style during the Archaic period. This oinochoe, or small wine jug, is covered in leaf, bird, and geometric patterns.
Adapted from
DMA unpublished material [1970.3], 1995.
NOTES
Notes from visit of 24 April 1987 with Arielle Kozloff and Carlos Picon:
Arielle knows nothing about Ionian wares but suggested Rob Guy as a reference. Carlos said it had an unusual design with the cross-hatching and that it was very ambitious, exotic, and unusually large. He also believes that it is much more likely that the piece is Eastern Greek, (or possibly Phrygian or Carian) than Ionian; he recommended comparing the clay with excavated examples from these areas.
