2008.72 Necklace with anthropomorphic pendants

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Trade items and local goldwork are harmoniously combined in this necklace, which is more Western in form than most Indonesian jewelry. The beads probably originated in East Timor. The shapes of the three gold pendants suggest highly stylized human figures or trophy heads from raids: circular heads crown two armlike arcs, which merge gracefully with wide diamond-shaped bodies.

Excerpt from
Roslyn A. Walker, Label text, 2013.
