1985.R.900, Candlestick, porcelain, Jingdezhen, China, c. 1775-1800

Candlesticks are uncommon in Chinese export porcelain, and this example from the Reves Collection appears to be especially rare. It was evidently modeled after mid-18th-century European metal examples. The shape of its "drop-base" is similar to 18th-century English silver and brass samples. However, the flattened central shaft and the double ionic volutes are highly unusual and may stem from the Chinese potter's misinterpretation of or experimentation with the imported pattern.
