1953.45 Odilon Redon, Apocalypse of St. John, Pl. X: "And the devil that deceived them..."

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Apocalypse of St. John (Apocalypse de Saint-Jean) by Redon is an album of twelve lithographs published by Ambroise Vollard in Paris in 1899. The album draws its subject from biblical verses in the Revelation of St. John the Divine. This image of the devil emerging from the darkness is accompanied by biblical text: "And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are." The theme of the solitary visionary recurs throughout Odilon Redon's body of work and evokes the Symbolists' interest in prophecy and dreams.

Excerpt from
Dorothy Kosinski, DMA label copy, 1997.
