GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The body of this vase is incised with a lotus pattern, while a small tiger curves around the neck and a swan rests on the lid. In addition to representing actual animals, these figures also act as protective spirits. All parts of this vessel are formed into a sculptural whole unified by the thick celadon glaze that covers both lid and body. The gray-green glaze resembling jade was one of the most treasured porcelain glazes in the Song dynasty (CE 960-1279).
