GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Some works of art, such as this one, can be mystifying. Scholars are intrigued by them, yet they know little about why, where, and how the works were made and used. This woman’s shawl—or is it a head scarf?—exemplifies this quandary.
The seaming together of narrow woven bands is similar to that of textiles from West Africa. To some scholars, the asymmetry of the embroidered designs and the choice of colors place the cloth in northern Nigeria, but to others, the choice of embroidered motifs place it in Cameroon.
The quest for understanding continues.
