2000.211.FA Bonnard, Portrait of Renoir

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Pierre Bonnard met the aging Pierre-Auguste Renoir by the fall of 1898. The duo were photographed among the mourners at Stéphane Mallarmé's funeral in September of that year. They established a close friendship over the coming decades and frequently visited each other during sojourns in the south of France. Bonnard's simplified portrait of his ailing father figure was likely based on a photograph and made at the request of Ambroise Vollard.
