2000.213.FA Edouard Vuillard, Woman with a Bouquet

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Madame Vuillard was a constant presence in her son's life and in his art, her everyday rituals catalogued in countless images. In this etching made just a few years before her death in 1928, Edouard Vuillard shows his elderly mother in a quiet, solitary moment, fixing herself a pot of tea. For this rare etching, of which few examples survive, the artist may have been inspired by a famous 18th-century painting by Jean-Siméon Chardin of his wife taking tea.

Heather MacDonald, DMA Label copy, 2014.
