GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This photograph of Georgia O’Keeffe is one of many produced by William Clift between 1977 and 1984, when he frequently visited the elderly painter at her home and studio in New Mexico. The stark landscape and unique lighting of the American Southwest became the frequent subject in O’Keeffe’s paintings, as well as in Clift’s photographs. Here, the portrait offers very little information about the setting. The bare wall behind O’Keeffe acts as a backdrop for the natural lighting and focuses our attention on the contour of her hair and profile.
