GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This ancient Greek necklace is composed of thirty-seven spool-shaped garnet beads, each threaded between the loops of a double-eight-shaped link of gold wire, alternating with thirty-nine gold beads of the same shape, threaded in the same way. A hook and eye are set underneath the heads of the griffins that form the terminals. The animals' horns, ears, and crests are made sparately. Small decorative collars made of beaded, plain, and herringbone wire are attached to each head. A cone-shaped bead, probably of colored perishable material, was mounted on a still-existing gold wire to form the link between the finials and chain. A pendant in the shape of an African's head is possible a modern addition, although it dates to the same period as the necklace. Cut in garnet, the head is fitted with a gold cap of curly hair and has a gold setting around the lower edge of the neck, from which hangs a large globular garnet bead.
